PLUM ISLAND IN WINTER

Visiting Newburyport in the snowy season? It’s still worth a trip to the beach. The dunes transform into a beautiful, serene oasis for Snowy Owls, and when the sun hits the sand, it glows. You can park at the Parker River Wildlife Refuge main lot, or drive down beyond the main lot to the Hellcat Interpretive Trail lot. On foot, walk out to the main road, go left and walk down a few hundred feet to the boardwalk system that’s on the right. There are also paths from the Hellcat lot. These boardwalks have recently been restored and are quite nice.

Remember not to disturb the Snowy Owls. Photographers from all over the country come to this beach to see them, so it could be busy depending on their activity. You can see the activity here.
