DAY TRIP TO MONTSERRAT, SPAIN
Nestled high in the mountains in the Catalunian region of Spain, the Montserrat Monestry draws large crowds that travel from around the world. The word “Montserrat” means “sawed mountain”. It makes perfect sense when you see the silhouette of these unique rock formations.
Montserrat is a popular religious destination for many, as it is the site of the Santa Maria de Montserrat, a Benedictine abbey that hosts the Virgin of Montserrat (The Black Virgin). This Monestry has been of religious significance in Catalunia since pre-Christian times.
The Abbey is definitely the main attraction of Montserrat. However, even if you aren’t interested in the religious significance of this area, the views are absolutely incredible from the top of the mountains.
HOW TO GET THERE
From Barcelona, you can hop on a train that will take you to the base of Montserrat. From there, get on the cable car that will take you to the top. There is also a hike up if you’re feeling athletic, and also a funicular option. The tickets are fairly cheap but the lines can get long so plan accordingly.
WHAT TO DO
Here’s what we did during our time at Montserrat:
Explored the Abbey
Walked to the Cross of Sant Miguel (about a 20-25 min walk one way)
Ate lunch at the cafeteria (Not many food options at the top, food wasn’t anything to write home about.)
I’d highly recommend walking to the Cross of Sant Miguel as the views are amazing. The path is made of stone so hiking boots aren’t necessary.
I hope you enjoyed exploring this beautiful place with me! If you haven’t already, make sure you check out my other Spain posts.
Cheers, K
