NEWPORT CLIFF WALK AND EXPLORING DOWNTOWN

Newport, RI is a quaint ocean town located on Aquidneck Island, roughly 75 miles south of Boston.  The town draws in many tourists in the summer.  This town is enjoyed by people of all ages as there are many activities to do for all levels of physical ability.  Some of these include boating, swimming, shopping, eating along some nice spots along the water, taking a walk through the streets, and many more.  Newport is commonly known for its Cliff Walk.  The Cliff Walk is a 3.5 mi scenic walk along the ocean.  The path will take you right along the many mansions that were built right on the coast, and when I say they are impressive…I really mean they are impressive.  If you don’t wish to walk the entire route, there are many spots to hop on and off the path.  I would definitely recommend wearing sneakers or secure sandals because the path can be rough in some spots, so definitely not an option for anyone in a wheelchair or who is unsteady on their feet.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF NEWPORT

Newport was founded in 1693 by the English.  Trading was what propelled economic growth, along with the export of goods such as rum, fish, silver, and candles.  However, in the early 19th century, Newport needed to turn itself around after the British occupation which crippled their economy.  Because of its picturesque location, the town started to bustle with artists, writers, architects, landscape designers, etc.

Families such as the Vanderbilts and Griswolds from New York, came to Newport in the Gilded Age and built mansions along the coast.  This is how the Newport Mansions were first created.  Some of mansions are open for tours daily.  See the options for tours here.
