Welcome to St. Barts! This was one of my favorite islands we visited during our Silversea Cruise of the Caribbean. The island is known for the wealth and frequent famous visitors it attracts. The owner of Amazon, ya, I think his name is Jeff or something….he likes to park his yacht in the harbor (and that’s just one example). When we were there, Larry Ellison (founder of Oracle) was there.

A BREIF HISTORY

The island’s full name is Saint Barthelemy. It is a French-speaking island, the capital is Gustavia (where a lot of these photos were taken), and the red roofs you’ll see are remnants of the Swedish colonial era. The Sweds occupied the island before the Napoleonic Wars. Christopher Columbus arrived at the island in 1493 and named it Saint Barthelemy after his brother, Bartoloméo. Once we tendered to Gustavia from our cruise ship, we walked around the main streets. They were quite beautiful and well-maintained. There weren’t many people around as it was a low time of the year (we visited in December).

On the other hand, the harbor was full of life.

THE CATAMARAN

Next, it was time to hop on a catamaran cruise to Pointe de Colombier, a sheltered bay on the northern tip of the island.

Our catamaran trip included fresh fruit, wine, and lots of swimming. A great day if you ask me!
