TUSCANY IN APRIL
I’ve come to really enjoy Tuscany in the “off” season when it’s cooler (November or April). The colors are vibrant in these shoulder seasons compared to the heat of the summer when everything has dried out. The fall brings warm, rich dark reds and oranges, and the spring brings bright greens. It was unusual to see blossoms in Italy since I’m used to visiting well past this time of year. If you decide to visit in April, note that many businesses (hotels & restaurants especially) open around this time so double-check where you’re headed. The busy season is usually mid-April through October. Beating the crowds is wonderful, as long as places are open!
places of note
A few standouts from this trip:
L'Olivo Cucina Toscana Contemporanea - Located at Poggio Paradiso, this newer restaurant is classy, reasonable in price, well-managed, and has delicious Tuscan classics. The dining room is a beautiful contemporary Italian style, and the outdoor patio overlooking the hillside is stunning.
Pizzeria Paradiso - (Trequanda) This is an old family favorite, but I haven’t written about it here. It’s great because it’s a very local spot. Simple but great pizza and gelato.
Osteria delle Crete - Located in San Giovanni d’Asso, a quaint restaurant in the village with great food. The pici here is delicious!
A VISUAL TOUR OF THE GARDEN
Featuring cute pups, kitties, chickens, the moon, bright flowers, and lots of olive trees. I’ve been coming to my aunt’s farm since I was 6 years old and it’s amazing to return each time; seeing the familiar and noticing change simultaneously is a pretty cool thing to experience.
