A 24 HOUR GUIDE TO SALZBURG, AUSTRIA

Visiting Salzburg for a weekend? This post will walk you through some places you have to visit! I’ll be talking about some food spots I recommend, transportation to and from the airport, the best spots to take photos of the city, and more! If you only have a day or even a couple of days, this will ensure you see everything!

GETTING FROM SALZBURG AIRPORT TO THE CITY CENTER

If you are flying into Salzburg rather than coming via train, you’ll want to take bus #10. The buses can be found across the street from the airport exit and right near the rental car spot (Salzburg Airport is very small so it’s easy to get around). It’s a couple of euros for a ticket which can either be purchased on the bus or at a machine near the bus stop. I’d recommend buying it from the machine (the machine only takes certain credit cards so I’d recommend having some coins). The ride into the city center takes about 20 minutes. You can get off at a couple of places but I got off at the stop near Makartsteg Bridge (stop name: Salzburg Ferdinand-Hanusch-Platz).

There is a Starbucks right around the corner if you need to charge any devices or have a quick bite to eat before exploring!

MAKARTSTEG BRIDGE

Right after I got off the bus, I walked over to the Makartsteg Bridge. This is the bridge in Salzburg that’s covered in locks. There are beautiful views of the river from this spot, along with views of the Hohensalzburg Fortress.

There is a lovely walk along the river, along with benches to sit on.

MIRABELL PALACE AND GARDENS

If you’re a Sound of Music fan, this is a spot you must visit! They filmed part of the movie here (the famous scene when they run around the fountain). It’s free to walk through the gardens and they are so beautiful! Salzburg also has a full Sound of Music Tour; they take you all around the city by bus to visit all of the filming locations. I’d love to come back and do that someday! You can find more information about that here.

GETREIDEGASSE

Next, I walked over to the famous street, Getreidegasse. This picturesque road is filled with gift shops, restaurants, clothing stores, and more! It’s a heavily photographed street so if you’ve seen pictures of Salzburg, you’ve most likely seen this spot.

KAPUZINERKLOSTER MONASTERY

One of my favorite things I did was hike up to the Monastery. There were some amazing views of the city. Some pictures were taken on a drone, so if you’re looking for a good spot to fly, this is one! There is a big park so you won’t be bothering anyone. There is a little archway on Getreidegasse which will take you to the top.
